As educators transition to more of a constructivist approach throughout the curriculum, spaces to support integrated STEM activities are essential. Problem based hands on learning not only takes materials and tools, but enough space where kids have room to get creative and innovate.

“Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields have become increasingly central to U.S. economic competitiveness and growth,” (Citrus). These four areas of study are what make up STEM in todays modern society. It is through these fields that not only technology and the economy of societies expand, but also the minds of the individuals that pursue said careers. STEM encourages people to be innovative thinkers and problem solvers throughout their lives and thus creating and doing various acts that reflect their abilities to find solutions to situations that may have otherwise been seen as too overwhelming and impossible to resolve on the surface.

“All young people should be prepared to think deeply and to think well so that they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow,” (Science). It is because of this that STEM programs and courses should be provided and encouraged within schools so that these problem solving skills and careers can be honed and achieved by the future generations in society. “STEM work, like that of most jobs, is both rewarding and challenging. You might work on an interesting project that yields meaningful results, for example—but, to complete it, you might need to repeat an experiment many times or navigate complex government regulations,” (Statistics). Careers such as engineering, physicists, mathematicians, software developing, and web developing are all but a few of the jobs that STEM encapsulates.

How can STEM be infused into school curriculums though? By focusing more upon the science, math, and other problem solving courses such as physics and statistics courses or even computer science classes as well. Courses such as these allow for the skills of problem solving and critical thinking to grow and challenge students in ways that encourage them to expand their horizons and become more involved and curious about these fields and other possibilities that may not have noticed before. Allowing STEM to be more of a focus inside schools and universities is one way to allow our students and society to thrive and challenge themselves in a positive way for a brighter future. Resource Computer Solutions strongly believes in the value of STEM programs and encourages schools to create or find more courses infusing STEM into their curriculum.
